Abstract

Abstract

Traditional handicrafts have been the core art in every civilized nation throughout human history. Environmental conditions played a major role in creating the tremendous diversity these arts have shown.

In this study I will be discussing the main environmental conditions affecting the traditional handicrafts in Jordan; the way they reflected on these arts, their geographical distribution and methods of production.

By analyzing the data collected from different social groups with different socio-economical and political conditions throughout the 20th century, we found that these arts have changed dramatically due to the ongoing evolution in their respective societies.

By demonstrating the vast array of environmental, social, educational and political difficulties Traditional Handicrafts had to face, this study concluded that the environmental conditions in which many of these traditional handicrafts were practiced, were far from optimal.

The research recommends attaching more importance to these traditional handicrafts by:

Encouraging more detailed research projects that look into each traditional handicraft individually, its environment and the difficulties it faces.

Establishing more laws to improve the environmental conditions for these traditional handicrafts, taking into consideration the international recommendations.
