Variation Phenomenon in Arabic Musical Rhythms: an Analytical Study

This study examined the phenomenon of variation in Arabic accompanying music rhythms to demonstrate its value as an outcome of the interactive relationship between rhythmic lines. The significance of this study stems from the need to elaborate on distinguishing characteristics of the musical language that constitute the Jordanian musical heritage and define its identity. Local studies have been limited to providing a general definition of multiple rhythms used in Arabic music. They fail to give adequate attention to the multiple forms and functions of accompanying rhythm (darb) in the musical work through the relationship between melodic and accompanying rhythms. This creates a need for more thorough elaboration on the topic, which is what this study attempts to do
