Abstract

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to highlight the role of interior design in the nursing homes. Elderly persons in this category form a large proportion of the community with special needs have multiple problems such as mental, psychological, behavioral, social, and physical health. This study is of great importance as it will contribute to developing a comprehensive concept of elderly nursing homes, taking into account their multiple problems to create appropriate design to meet their basic needs, taking into consideration the general location of the building and the layout of interior spaces, living rooms, and dining rooms, garden and necessary fences, as these things are complentary.

 To achieve the objective of the study, an analytical approach was used. This study examined several scientific articles in different areas such as design, architecture, psychology, and gerontology that addressed different aspects of the association between factors of the built environment and its eldrly users. Findings of this paper show that the majority of reviewed studies agree on the significance of design in improving the quality of the elderly people’s life. However, these studies did not consider all necessary aspects in the designing of elderly nursing homes and its impact on elderly people. This study presents an entire picture of the elderly nursing homes taking into account their needs and abilities, when designing a typical home including its exterior and interior
