Storytelling Methods in Contemporary Saudi Art (An Analytical Study)

Abstract

Since ancient times, humans have used storytelling as a means of visual communication and historical documentation throughout the ages. This study is concerned with revealing the concept of storytelling in the visual arts and revealing its methods in contemporary Saudi art through the analysis of contemporary Saudi artistic works between the years (2011-2020). The study followed the descriptive analytical approach for (5) contemporary Saudi artistic works which were chosen as a purposive sample according to specific standards. The study yielded several results, the most important of which are:

 The most prominent types of storytelling that have appeared in contemporary Saudi art are: single-scene narrative, continuous narrative, sequential narrative, panoramic narrative, and progressive narrative.The components of the narrative structure that appeared in contemporary Saudi art are concentrated in: place, time, characters, event, dialogue, retrieval, language and plot; and there was no appearance of anticipation as a narrative component in artistic works.                                                                                                                                   The study recommended conducting studies related to the use of artificial intelligence and its role in developing storytelling in the visual arts. It also recommended conducting studies and research on storytelling in interactive arts
