Abstract

The residential space of houses is a living and honest expression of the culture and civilization of peoples and nations. This research aims to study the residential space of Circassian houses in the city of Jerash during the period (1950-2000 AD). The researcher uses the descriptive analytical historical method by describing the construction of Circassian residential houses and their historical development during the specified time period. The Circassian architect was able to preserve his intellectual and cultural identity, and this was reflected in his residential space, which took on more than one style during the 1950s. The first was the traditional style of construction, which consisted of doors, windows, courtyards, and their annexes, characterized by its simplicity and the use of mud, wooden columns, and arches in construction. In the late twentieth century, the Circassian construction style evolved in the form of residential space, and later, developments in society and its traditions imposed changes in the construction style.

The study concludes that the construction of the Circassian house reflects the culture of the Circassian community in terms of the nature of the construction and the mechanism of its design and formation from the 1950s until a later period in the twentieth century. The Circassian house is distinguished from other houses in the city of Jerash by its doors and windows, which remained as they were before the changes were made to the Circassian residential space. The Circassian designer expressed his customs, traditions, and social thought through art in general, and interior design and architecture in particular.

One of the research recommendations is to focus on the environment as a key factor in achieving the design of the residential space of houses to reach the highest levels of quality in construction and keeping pace with the developments that accompanied its design for other social groups in the city of Jerash, and comparing them with the design of the residential space of Circassian houses there. Moreover, it recommends working to restore Circassian buildings by the Department of Antiquities, which are heritage houses that deserve attention as a cultural heritage of the Circassians in the city of Jerash.
