The art of Mashrabiyas between history and modernity
Keywords:

The study aims to explore the art of Mashrabiyas and how they have been used in the past and present. The study relies on the descriptive analytical method, through reviewing related studies and research, and analyzing seven modern Arab and international architectural models that employ Mashrabiyas in their designs. The study indicates that Mashrabiyas are traditional architectural elements that possess distinctive functional and aesthetic values. They contribute to controlling the temperature of the interior space by preventing direct sunlight from passing through, and they also help maintain humidity levels and the flow of cool air. In addition, Mashrabiyas preserve the privacy of users. Moreover, Mashrabiyas rely on the art of wood carving (khart), which results in the formation of a decorative wooden screen with geometric patterns of distinctive aesthetic value at the level of the interior space, the architectural design of the building, and the urban context of the city.
On the other hand, Mashrabiyas are used in modern architecture through their traditional form, or by utilizing their philosophy and developing multiple designs that perform the same function with the support of modern technologies, or by redefining them with a modern design of the traditional Mashrabiya model and integrating it in an innovative way.
The study recommends expanding the use of Mashrabiyas and their philosophy in modern architecture as a means of preserving the art of Mashrabiyas, enhancing the sustainability of buildings and their ability to meet human needs, and establishing Arab identity in modern architectural styles.
