Abstract

Artistic appreciation and criticism are essential for understanding the implicit meanings and symbolic connotations of artworks. With the recent developments in the fields of arts and methods of presenting them to the audience, individuals often find themselves unable to enjoy the aesthetic dimensions of art due to their inability to analyze its components and grasp its intended message or concept. Accordingly, this study seeks to explore the possibility of designing a proposed program to develop artistic appreciation and criticism based on Lewis Lankford’s critical reading approach. The study aims to clarify the concepts of artistic appreciation and criticism, and to examine Lankford’s reading as a foundation for preparing a program that fosters these skills. The study uses a descriptive-analytical methodology. It concluded that learning artistic appreciation and criticism is significant in understanding their interrelation, as both contribute to clarifying artistics concepts and enahancing visual taste. Moreover, the study found a dynamic relationship between critical reading and the development of appreciation and criticism, and it supports the construction of a program grounded in critical readings to promote these competencies.
