The Occurrence and Development of Double Bass

Abstract

This research aims to explore the history of double bass;

in particular its occurrence & development. Moreover, it

reveals this instrument’s historical origins, starting from its

birth, walking through the ages, to end up with its recent

modification. Referring to all vital instruments in the life of

double bass, and comparing between them. Nevertheless,

the research clarifies the periodical stages the instrument

went through. And it also explains the relationship between

developing the qualities of the instrument & the role it have

played in the orchestra over the ages, by analyzing several

musical pieces chosen from different periods. What is more,

this research includes various techniques of tuning double

bass’s strings through the centuries.
