Abstract

Abstract

Irony is a means of expression in which people often use words to mean the opposite of what the speaker really intends. It is a humorous divice that reflects on the society’s errors and crooked behaviour. Hence, Irony is closely related to society. Like any other genre or any type of art, irony emerges as changes in life occur with the development in society. Via irony, then, the status of the society, its previous events, and any of its social and personal weak points can be read.

Accordingly, the theoretical part of the present study comprises three sections. The first is on the concept of irony and sarcasm; the second is on the effect of irony on the individuals and society; and the third is on the realistic criticism of Daumir, in addition to the literature review of the previous studies. In the practical part, however, a selective sample that can be examined has been identified within the limits of the study. The fourth section presents the results and conclusions, recommendations and suggestions, and references.
